When cooking in the well-appointed kitchens of our PepperTree Apartment Homes, many residents look for ways to eat healthy. Because of this, some residents may choose to follow a specific diet. One diet that has become increasingly popular is the Paleo Diet.
The Paleo Diet is founded on the principle that early man ate differently than we do today. Our ancestors did not have access to processed foods and refined sugars, so the reasoning is that cutting these types of food out is better for us. Furthermore, this diet breaks down how many calories you should get from different food groups each day, and proposes that those on the diet adhere to the following:
Protein – 19 to 35 percent of calories should come from proteins such as meat and seafood. It is estimated that the average person only gets 15 percent of their calories from protein, so this diet aims to increase protein intake.
Fruits and vegetables – 35 to 40 percent of calories for those on this diet should come from non-starchy fruits and vegetables, and these should also to be the main sources of carbohydrates and fiber.
Avoid Trans fats – This diet acknowledges that the human body does in fact need some fat, but that those on this diet should avoid Trans fats and polyunsaturated fats in favor of monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats, which are found more naturally in foods such as fish and walnuts.
