How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh Longer

Buying fresh flowers is an effective way to brighten up a living space and bring a bit of nature’s beauty into a home. While it’s inevitable for flowers to eventually wilt, most people want to keep them looking fresh and vibrant for as long as possible, something that the following methods may help achieve:

  • Apple cider vinegar and sugar – Flowers use sugar as food. The issue with sugar is that it accelerates bacterial growth. In order to combat this, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar should be mixed with 1 teaspoon of sugar and added to the flowers’ water. This will enable them to get the food they need while preventing increased bacterial growth.
  • Refrigeration – While this may not be a method that’s typically considered, refrigerating flowers is an effective way to lengthen their lifespan. Since people want to show off flowers during the day, the best thing to do is pop them in the fridge before heading to bed and take them out in the morning.
  • Maintain them – Aside from giving flowers the food they need and keeping them cool, it’s important to take other measures in order to ensure optimal freshness. This includes cutting the stem at least a half-inch before placing flowers in water (this allows them to better absorb water and nutrients), removing foliage that falls into the water (make sure only stems are in the water, as any leaves will quickly rot), as well as washing the vase and changing the water (remember to add food to the new water) every three days.
