Herb Substitutions That Can be Used When Cooking in Our Apartments near The Villages, FL
We make it easy to have fun cooking at PepperTree Apartment Homes, because our kitchens are outfitted with luxurious features such as large refrigerators, spacious pantries and cabinets, and glass-top stoves. But sometimes when you’re cooking, you might find you have run out of a spice or herb that is called for in the recipe. Instead of stopping in the middle of cooking to go to the store, check first to see if you have any of these substitutions on hand. When the proper herb or spice substitution is used, it will still add depth of flavor without overpowering the other ingredients in the dish.
Here is a list of spices and their recommended substitutions:
- Basil – oregano or thyme
- Chives – green onions or leeks
- Cilantro – parsley
- Italian seasoning – any of the following combined: basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme
- Marjoram – basil or thyme
- Mint – basil or rosemary
- Oregano – basil or thyme
- Parsley – chervil or cilantro
- Red pepper flakes – dash of hot sauce
- Rosemary – thyme or tarragon
- Sage – marjoram, rosemary, or poultry seasoning
- Thyme – basil, marjoram, or oregano
Keep in mind, not all of these substitutions work the other way around. For example, if a dish calls for mint you can use rosemary instead and likely still achieve a pleasant taste, but, if a recipe calls for rosemary and you substitute mint, it may not taste as desired. Even so, by using these tips, our residents have a better chance of keeping their cooking uninterrupted in our apartments near The Villages, FL.
