Ways to Save Water and Cut Down on Your Bill
According to a study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American uses around 123 gallons of water every day; and the entire U.S. wastes around a combined 7 billion gallons of water each day. Not only is this a waste of a precious resource, but it can needlessly drive up the cost of water bills.
By taking some time and making small adjustments, you can drastically reduce the amount of water you’re wasting and cut down on your water bill each month. Here are a few ways that you can cut down on your water usage at home:
- Install a low-flow shower head and take short showers instead of baths – The low-flow shower head will reduce the amount of water that comes out of your shower. The average bath uses about 35 gallons, while a low-flow shower head only uses about 2 gallons per minute. So, taking a quick shower will save a lot of water.
- Only run full loads in the dishwasher or washing machine – These machines will use almost the same amount of water whether you are washing one item or an entire load. To avoid wasting water, make sure that you have each of the machines full before using them.
- Turn off the faucet while you brush your teeth – Water comes out of the faucet at an average of 2.5 gallons per minute. Turning off the faucet while you brush instead of letting it run can really add up over time.
By just taking these small steps you can dramatically reduce the amount of water you use and save on your bill every month.
