Four Iconic American Poets

It can be difficult to determine the factors that make a poet iconic. Often, it has to do with whether their works are still being appreciated by the public years after they were written. There are many esteemed writers whose works are considered integral components of American culture and stand the test of time. Some of these poets include:

  1. Emily Dickinson – Born in Massachusetts in the 1800s, Emily Dickinson is known for having been a reclusive individual. Yet, in spite of the fact that she seldom left her home, her words continue to resonate with millions of individuals. She is known for her emotive poems, which discuss subjects like love and family.
  2. Edgar Allan Poe – This 19th century writer is renowned for his poems and short stories, which often center on macabre topics. One of his most well-known works is “The Raven.” This piece helps encapsulate the darker ambiance of Poe’s works with lines like, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.”
  3. Langston Hughes – A poet, social activist, novelist, and playwright, Langston Hughes was a major contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, the African American artist movement that took place in the U.S. in the 1920s.
  4. Maya Angelou – This respected writer was born in 1928 and is known for her celebrated memoir, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” as well as her various poetry and essay collections.
