Reasons to Eat the Peel of These Fruits and Veggies

Some individuals may think it’s necessary to peel fruits and vegetables before consuming them. However, while certain fruits, such as bananas, have peels that are too tough to eat, not all fruits and veggies follow suit. Here are some foods with peels that have an array of health benefits:

  • Apples – Many individuals already eat unpeeled apples, but those who do not may want to reconsider. That’s because apple peels are said to contain two to six times more nutrients and fiber than the flesh of apples. For instance, a medium, unpeeled apple has about 8.4 milligrams of vitamin C, whereas a peeled one has about 6.4 milligrams. Additionally, an apple loses about 2 grams of fiber when it is peeled.
  • Cucumbers – These vegetables are low in calories and high in nutritional value. To fully benefit from these nutrients, however, it’s better to eat them unpeeled. One cup of unpeeled cucumber has about 17 micrograms of vitamin K, whereas the same quantity of peeled cucumber only has 8.5 micrograms. Vitamin K is said to help regulate blood clotting and assist in the body’s absorption of calcium.
  • Mangoes – When it comes to delicious tropical fruits, mango tends to be a popular choice by many individuals. But one thing some may not know is that this fruit can be eaten with the skin, which contains antioxidants.

You may be able to find some of these fruits and vegetables in the markets located near our apartments by The Villages, FL, such as The Fresh Market. To learn more about PepperTree Apartment Homes, contact us today.
