Poets that Poetry Lovers Will Want to Read
Poetry is one of the most distinctive genres of literature. Using specific styles and rhythms, poems tend to communicate intense feelings or ideas regarding the world around us. Any lovers of literature who are interested in expanding their repertoire of poetry should consider exploring the works of the following writers:
- Pablo Neruda – Known as one of the most romantic poets of all time, Neruda was a Nobel Prize-winning writer from Chile. His most well-known collection of poems, “Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair,” was published when he was just 19 and remains the best-selling poetry book in the Spanish language. One of his most famous poetry lines is, “I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, / in secret, between the shadow and the soul.”
- E.E. Cummings – An American writer, E.E. Cummings was known for his decapitalization of words (including the initials of his name and the letter “I”), unusual form of punctuation, his tendency to create compound words (such as “manunkind”), and concrete poetry. One of his most celebrated poems is “i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart).”
- Rupi Kaur – Unlike Neruda and Cummings, both of whom died in the 20th century, Kaur is a Canadian poetess and illustrator who was born in 1992. Common themes in her poetry include romance, heartbreak, and womanhood. She writes solely in lowercase and the only punctuation she uses are periods. Kaur published her first collection of poems, titled “milk and honey,” in 2015.
